YOUTH NEWS

The last week of July, Kelly Wilson and myself were able to take a group of college students on a short term mission trip to Red Springs, North Carolina.

We were able to work with Larry Osborn and the North Carolina Baptist Men in a community that has been hard hit with unemployment. When we arrived at the Red Springs facility we found the accommodation good, the staff very friendly and plenty of work to be done. The first two days we worked at several medical clinics cutting the grass, trimming the hedges, picking up limbs and trash. These clinics served many of the lower and no income families in the area. These clinics had been unable to pay anyone to do this work. You can imagine the condition of these yards. The staff at each facility was glad that we came to help and we were able to pray with some of the workers at these clinics.

We worked on two other projects while we were there. We helped repair the roof of a home of a tornado victim. This was a blessing for us. The young mother was a recovering cancer victim and the family had recently completely lost their house to a tornado. The North Carolina Baptist Men along with local churches agreed to help this family rebuild their house. We were also able to help make and install benches and locker for the Red Springs high school field houses. Larry was hoping that this project would open the doors in other schools for the North Carolina Baptist men. The trip was not without excitement. In the first thirty minutes of the first full day we almost lost our summer intern, Matt. He was busy running a grass trimmer when he was suddenly ambushed by legions of fire ants. Shirt, shoes and socks were flying through the air as Matt worked furiously trying to slap and scrape the ants from his body. I thought about telling him to drop and roll, but I do not think he would have appreciated my advice. It seems a little humorous now, but at the time we were more than a little concerned about Matt, because he had an allergic reaction to the bites. Because we were working at a medic clinic, Matt was able to quickly get medical attention.

It was good to have the ladies working along with us guys because they were very conscience of how the appearance of things could be improved. While we guys where busy working, the ladies thought that our room needed improving. We were very pleased with our new décor.

Over all I was very pleased with how the trip went. Matt lead us through a Bible study from the book of Job and our discussions were very good. It is good to see how many of the students that I have had over the pass few years have began to grow to a deeper understanding of the scriptures. Keep them in prayer as they start a new year of education. Pray that they stay on mission every day and everywhere.

By His Grace,
Danny
